A simple one click bat file to mirror drives for backup

I use this script to mirror a drive, and it only transfers files that are changed/new. So it can help save bandwidth/time if you are using a slow link/connection.

1) Download robocopy and place it in the correct directory (by default windows 7 and 8 can skip this step)

2) create a .bat file and put these contents in:

@echo off

robocopy E:\ “\\server\j” /MIR /E

3) There you go, just double click it!

Can Dell PE860 (power edge 860) run 3TB drives on the motherboard SATA?

I found out the answer is yes! I have hooked up 2 3TB drives into the onboard SATA and was able to successfully raid 1 them within Ubuntu 12.10. I was not able to do this with the Perc raid controller, as it only saw 2.2TB.

Microsoft Office 2013 PRO ISO/IMG Direct Downloads

I needed these for a retail key I received from my employer for $10, so these were useful, as I did not want to install the cheap software they had to go and download the IMG.

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted – MySQL error – PHPMyAdmin

I had a client trying to import a 200M zip file to phpmyadmin to import into his MySQL database, he kept receiving this error:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 201380904 bytes) in /usr/local/cpanel/base/3rdparty/phpMyAdmin/libraries/zip_extension.lib.php on line 65

It ends up that phpmyadmin is using its own php.ini config, and defaults the memory size to 128M.

Edit the file : /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/etc/php.ini.dist

there is a line that says memory_limit, change that to what you’d like. I changed mine to 264M.

You will want to restart cPanel as well:

/etc/init.d/cpanel restart

You will lose this setting upon reboot, so if you want to keep it, you will want to run this:

echo "/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/etc/php.ini.dist" >> /etc/cpanelsync.exclude

This will exclude the file when it goes to sync/update with cPanel.

AT LOTTO POOL 2

RULES :
BUY IN = $5 – We kicked around the idea of doing more money, but I think we should get as many people as possible. I included a vote option in the form below in step 2.

In the past some have put in more money, but let it be known, if we win, we will still all get an equal share! But we will all thank you greatly for the extra contribution, and I will let it be known who was nice enough to bump it up (if you so wish, or I can keep it anonymous).

DEADLINE: Today Wednesday November 28, 2012
2PM Pacific
3PM Mountain
4PM Central
5PM Eastern

EXAMPLE WINNING SCENARIO:

We win $250,000, 50 people bought in, we split $250,000 – tax cut / 50, so we all get $X,000. We’ll have to look into the tax issue if the amount is of a concern, but we can worry about that later. I am thinking I take the tax cut, and say we’re an anonymous group of friends who won. I will then divide it up how you like … I can mail a check, cash, MO, etc. We have options, but like I said, let’s not worry about it until we win 🙂

or split it pretax and you collect yourself and pay your taxes. If I recall someone said that was an option.

STEP 1 :

send $5 to paypal address : ENDED
MAKE SURE YOU SEND AS A GIFT and say THIS IS FOR A DONATION FOR THE WEBSITE

If you would like to send as Amazon.com gift card that is OK too – ENDED

STEP 2 :
Enter your email address here :
REMOVED

This way I can keep track of everyone two fold, and then send a quick email once I get the actual tickets and we can split up the data entry work as we did last time. I will also update this blog post.

If you want to chat, post in my forums, it is pretty empty right now and open to GUEST so you do not have to log in for the time being :

http://twopumpchumps.com/forums/index.php/topic,14983.0.html

UPDATE : 4:10 PM CST

Going to pick up the tickets nowl.

We got $410, 82 participants, IF we win, I will accurately see who paid and get a real number and namelist. Not everyone put their name on the email list.

UPDATE: 6:23PM CST

Purchased $430 worth of tickets, we had a few stragglers come in at the last second. Email sent, if you did not get it, go ahead and post and I will re-email. We do not want to post the google document link as it is publicly allowed to edit by ANYONE, who knows who reads this blog

UPDATE : 11:30pm

We only won $20 🙁

Samsung 830 256GB in raid 0 with Z77 chipset and TRIM

Got my new drives, two Samsung 830 256GB I then dropped them into an intel ROM raid 0 with Intel RST 11.6 drivers and I get some pretty great looking benchmarks AND TRIM! These were running on my Asus P8Z77-I DELUXE ITX motherboard.

[zp src=”AS-SAMSUNGRAID0.png” album=”vivi/” width=”600″]

The benchmarks speak for themselves. If anyone would like me to run some other tests, let me know.

This is the test PC build by the way : El Linko

Silverstone TEK SG05 + EVGA GTX 680 + ASUS P8Z77-I DELUXE + NOCTUA NH-L12 – The ITX mini beast!

okay, so I am reducing the footprint of my computer, a LOT. If you follow, I had a 600T rig :

http://vivithemage.com/2011/04/water-cooling-a-corsair-600t-case-i5-2500k-2×6950/

I am now going with an itty bitty SG05. I fought between the SG05 and the SG08 a lot, I wasn’t sure what I wanted … and the PSU only having 450W 36AMP +12V capable made me go back and forth, I felt safe going with the SG05. Since footprint was my MAIN concern. I also fought a few other boxes, but in the end, they were just too big to go ITX IMO.

Fractal Design Node size : Dimensions (mm) 250 x 374 x 210 (W x D x H)
Lian Li PC-Q08B size : Dimensions (mm) 227 x 345 x 272 (W x D x H)
Lian Li TU200 size: Dimensions(mm) 220 x 360 x 320(W x D x H)
Silverstone SG08 size: Dimensions (mm) 222 x 351 x 190 (W x D x H)
Silverstone SG05 size: Dimensions (mm) 222 x 276 x 176 (W x D x H)

So this would be my component list

Silverstone TEK SG05
Noctua NH-L12
ASUS P8Z77-I DELUXE
i5 2500k
EVGA GTX 680
CRUCIAL Ballistix Sport 16GB (8GBx2) DDR3-1600
Crucial M4 128GB SSD
3 x Samsung 830 256GB

This was a fun build, super tiny, super compact. So far I have gamed on it for a few hours, and it’s running great. I used some Arctic Silver 5 to adhere it to the heatsink. Under full load I am seeing 46C on my i5 2500k. I have not tested much further then that though.

Here it is naked, with the motherboard, and GPU inserted. The GPU was a pain to install. I had to remove the silver bracket as well as wiggle it in. I did not bend anything, which was nice.

[zp src=”P1030122.JPG” album=”vivi/SG05-PCBUILD2012″ width=”600″]

Here is a quick top side view :

[zp src=”P1030123.JPG” album=”vivi/SG05-PCBUILD2012″ width=”600″]

Here’s me jerry rigging a scythe SLIM fan on top of the heatsink, because the stock one it came with was too large and hit the PSU. I have a little volt modifer that makes it super quiet, but pushes some air still. As you can see, I also put some electrical tape on the side of the heatpipes, because it is almost touching the GPU board.

[zp src=”P1030125.JPG” album=”vivi/SG05-PCBUILD2012″ width=”600″]

I ended up removing the grill, as I could not get the screw downs to work properly, oh well. It still works, and so far no cables have touched it.

[zp src=”P1030126.JPG” album=”vivi/SG05-PCBUILD2012″ width=”600″]

Everything going back in :

[zp src=”P1030127.JPG” album=”vivi/SG05-PCBUILD2012″ width=”600″]

Another side view :

[zp src=”P1030129.JPG” album=”vivi/SG05-PCBUILD2012″ width=”600″]

The GPU all snug 🙂 :

[zp src=”P1030131.JPG” album=”vivi/SG05-PCBUILD2012″ width=”600″]

And the back side :

[zp src=”P1030132.JPG” album=”vivi/SG05-PCBUILD2012″ width=”600″]

I will do some more extensive testing with my killawatt, and temp performance on the CPU and GPU. Otherwise, everything seems to be rock solid now. I currently have the heatsink fans in a push pull going TOWARDS the CPU, I might change it up if I get time and find some more zip ties haha. If you’d like me to test something specifically, let me know!

*UPDATE OCT 26th

I flipped the PSU to push air upwards towards the vents, and it did drop about 2C under full load.

How To Install Windows 7 from a USB Key with ISO links!

I’ve been reading a few methods to install Windows 7 from an ISO to a jump drive, or DVD. The best method to do it from a Windows computer is to obtain Microsoft’s own software for the task :

http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe

Install that, and point it to the jump drive you want to use (it will get wiped), and point it to the ISO you want to install on to it.
