This was a very simple mod, did not require anything, other then 4 new/shorter screws to replace the ones that were longer on the M4, and a bit of electrical tape. Without hte electrical tape, the drive was undetected, it was shorting out by touching the metal top…so there is a reason to the spacer :).
So far battery life has improved over the 320gb 7200rpm drive the x220 came with. I’d say a good 30 minutes over a usage. The battery still needs a bit of burn in though.

Oh, i’ve seen it in another blog of yours 😀 hehe
thanks,
Yup, it’s listed on my most current :). If you want another benchy, let me know.
Will this void the warranty ???
I would assume no, there was no warranty sticker when I unscrewed mine.
Awesome ! I’ll be getting a X220 with this real soon.
-Do you put the top cover back on ??
-Where do I get the new screws ?
-Can I slip a sheet cut out from anti-static wrap in between instead of tape ? (to avoid getting sticky glue on the chips incase I have to RMA)
I couldn’t get these answers anywhere else!
Thanks a lot!
Nope , not possible.
So you just insert it back without the top cover ?
Does it go in easy ? Any wiggle ?
Where did you find the new screw?
I got it from some screws I had from other builds/projects. I cannot tell the exact size/model, sorry! I know some people on the web used some m4 sized screws.
Hi,
I am interested to make the same setup. What is the PcMark result on your laptop?
Thanks!
I have not run it, what version of PCMark is free these days?
I used PCMark Vantage which is free (but ~700Mb!).
http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/pcmarkvantage/download/
I would be curious to see the impact of the SATA III SSD on performance. They don’t report these things in review sites.
I hope you have time to run it!
thanks again.
For example see the PCMark Vantage results that engadget has here:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/29/sony-vaio-z-review-2011/
They compare the vaio z with the 2011 MBA and also X220 (with HDD). I think your setup will be even better and cheaper 🙂
Any specific test? I have PCMark Vantage. It’s a 1 and a half hour test with the run all sort of thing, haha.
I think you just run one default test “Run Benchmark”. The other tests are for the paid/full version.
You register first and then you get a key for running it once. All the reviews that I posted above do the same thing.
I hope you can manage it.
I got it registered.
PCMark Vantage Professional 64bit 1.0.2.0 score : 13760
Sweet. Faster than the 2,600$ Vaio Z 🙂
Thanks man!
I also snagged a screenshot :

I got my 128GB M4 !!! Still waiting on the X220 to ship.
What can I use in place of electrical tape ???
I don’t want the sticky residue from the tape-glue stuck on the chips / board (in case I have to return it for refund).
Any ideas ???
Thanks.
Good question, maybe try cutting up a portion of anti static bag, and put it on the top?
Screws can be found at http://www.laptopscrews.com (no really, no fooling)
The screws are M2X3MM part #10124 from laptopscrews.com.
Thanks Mark, I will add this to the post.
